Chapter 3

The trip home was jarring to say the least. The cabin had seemed a million miles away, and after a 6 hour drive the tall buildings, the honking of cabs, and the constant vibrations of text messages made Carrie uneasy.

Her time with Calvin had only lasted days, but it felt like an eternity. In between their love making he would crack jokes and ramble on about the futility of life in the fast lane – and his arguments had been persuasive.

Looking in the mirror at home, she put on her work clothes and make up with robotic detachment. The spark was gone. A cup of coffee on the way helped, and a little mailroom chit chat put a smile back on her face.

“Great job!” someone said getting off the elevator, and she smiled, pressing the button for the top flood: management. She checked her makeup in the reflection of the steel doors and tapped her foot nervously. She had no reason to be nervous, she had just finished one of the biggest deals in the company’s history – she could ride on that accomplishment alone for months, and the idea seemed appetizing – not at all the world view of the girl who had left this massive office building only four days earlier, with a manila folder and a company SUV.

When the door opened her eyes went wide.

“Calvin?!”

The tall billionaire looked nothing like he had at the cabin the day before. He was clean shaven, his suit immaculately tailored and pressed. His jaw was clenched tight, and his blue eyes had none of the light and joy she remembered.

He pressed past her into the elevator, tailed by an assistant scribbling away at her notepad.

“Calvin!” she called as he passed, grabbing his arm.

“Don’t.” he said.

“What did-“

“Just don’t. Honestly, that deal meant nothing to me – I just wanted to-“ he shook his head “How could you.”

She opened her mouth to answer, but he reached for the panel and the doors slid shut with a hiss. What the hell? She fell back against the doors. It felt like she had been kicked in the stomach.

“Ah Carrie, good, you’re here.” Someone called.

Her mind was racing. What happened?

“Carrie?”

She snapped back to reality.

“Sorry boss. How was your weekend?”

She walked through the lobby and through the huge glass doors to his office. Behind his desk the entire city could be seen, huge towers scraping the sky all around them. She stopped a few feet short of his desk.

“Not as good as yours.” He said, sitting down and throwing a manila folder onto the massive wooden desk. “That was unbelievable work, Carrie.”

She recognized the folder, it was the one she had Calvin sign days before.

“Thank you, Boss. But-“

“Carrie meet Johnathan Steele.” He interrupted “President of Steele Consolidated. He’s very eager to meet you.”

Sitting next to her was a sharply dressed man. He was handsome, if not a little stocky, and his eyes burned with the same shark-like brightness typical of the titans of industry. He held out a hand, and she shook it.
